K1 Lesson 13: Shapes Hunt

Material Checklist β€” Full Lesson

Learning Objectives

Warm-up: Meeting Up & Warming Up (10 mins)

Purpose: Settle into the safe circle, preview today's shape theme, then energize with a shape song and foam-shape response drill before the classroom hunt.

Step 1 Β· Meeting Up (β‰ˆ5 min)

Purpose: Psychological safety, predictable arrival, preview shape vocabulary.

Teacher Β· Arrival & circle welcome

"Good morning, shape detectives! Hello! Find your spot β€” same safe circle."
"Look at me." (hold Look card) "Listen." (hold Listen card) "We are in the same safe circle. Today we hunt shapes!"
"Circle, square, triangle, star β€” we find them everywhere! Are you ready?"

Teacher Β· Door greeting script

"Hello, [name]! Welcome, shape detective β€” circles and squares hide everywhere!"
"Find your dot. Walking feet today β€” we hunt shapes in our classroom."
"[Name] is here β€” one more detective β€” our team is ready!"

Teacher Β· Shape card peek

"Peek β€” circle!" (draw circle in air) "Peek β€” square!" (draw square corners)
"Shapes hide in our classroom β€” but first β€” quiet eyes. Look β€” Listen β€” Sit."
"Save your hunt for later β€” listen first!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child shouts a random shape ("Heart!"), smile: "Hearts are lovely! Today β€” circle, square, triangle, star. Watch β€” circle!"

If a child runs to touch classroom objects during preview, pause: "Walking feet to your dot. Hunt starts soon β€” sit first."

If a child hides a foam shape under their shirt, gentle redirect: "Shapes stay in hands β€” show me your circle foam."

Management Cue: Eyes on me in 3, 2, 1 β€” hold up three fingers, then point to your eyes. Wait for whole-group attention before showing shape cards.
Management Cue: Keep hunt clipboards out of reach until Step 3 β€” visible on a shelf but not touchable during Meeting Up.
Management Cue: Show the Listen pause card if two or more children talk over you β€” hold it at chest height for 3 full seconds before speaking again.
  1. Door greeting: Hello to each child + invite to circle spot.
  2. Look Β· Listen Β· Sit with cards β€” 3-second settle wait.
  3. Flash four shape cards quickly β€” "Today we hunt these shapes!"
  4. Model air-drawing each shape once β€” circle, square, triangle, star (β‰ˆ1 min).
  5. Preview hunt path with pointer wand β€” "We walk slow later β€” walking feet!"
  6. Quick hello review from Lesson 02 β€” wave and say Hello (β‰ˆ30 sec).

Step 2 Β· Warming Up (β‰ˆ5 min)

Purpose: Energy + shape song with foam shapes and air-drawing drill.

Teacher Β· Command review

"Magic words β€” Look! Listen! Sit! You remember every week β€” wonderful!"
"Today we add shape words. Circle! Square! Triangle! Star!"

Teacher Β· Shape song + foam hold-up

"Shape song time! When you hear a shape β€” hold up your foam shape β€” high!"
"Circle, circle, round and round β€” hold up circle!" (children raise foam circle)
"Square, square, four sides strong β€” hold up square!"
"Triangle, triangle, roof on top β€” hold up triangle! Star, star, sparkle bright β€” hold up star!"

Teacher Β· Air-draw drill

"Put foam shapes down. Finger in the air β€” draw with me!"
"Big circle β€” round and round! Square β€” four corners β€” tick tick tick tick!"
"Triangle β€” roof shape! Star β€” burst β€” five points! You are shape artists!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child holds the wrong foam shape, model without scolding: "Listen β€” circle song β€” circle foam. Try again β€” perfect!"

If a child throws foam shapes, pause song: "Soft hands β€” shapes stay in hands. Pick up together β€” restart."

If air-drawing becomes wild scribbling, reset: "Slow finger β€” watch my circle β€” copy me."

Management Cue: Distribute foam shapes one per child from a basket β€” never dump the whole set on the floor.
Management Cue: After foam activity, collect shapes into basket before air-draw β€” prevents distraction during hunt prep.
Management Cue: Split the group if energy is high: "This side draws circle β€” that side draws square!" Alternate sides.
  1. Look Β· Listen Β· Sit drill β€” 2 rounds (β‰ˆ1 min).
  2. Shape song with foam hold-up β€” 4 shapes Γ— 1 pass (β‰ˆ2 min).
  3. Air-draw drill: teacher leads each shape Γ— 2 rounds (β‰ˆ1 min).
  4. Quick check: hold two cards β€” "Which is circle? Which is square?" β€” point only (β‰ˆ30 sec).
  5. Transition: "You know the shapes β€” now hunt them in our classroom! Shape Hunt!"

Teacher Β· Transition to Main Activity

"Warm-up finished! You know circle, square, triangle, star."
"Look at me. Listen. Sit. Clipboard ready β€” Shape Hunt is next!"
"Walking feet β€” follow me β€” point and name β€” no running ahead!"

Main Activity: Classroom Shape Hunt & /c/ /s/ Phonics (15 mins)

Teacher Note: Opening Up builds real-world shape recognition through a guided classroom hunt; Cheering Up locks /c/ circle and /s/ square through visual cards, finger trace, and TPR. Review Look Β· Listen Β· Sit at every transition.

Step 3 Β· Opening Up (β‰ˆ8 min)

Purpose: MAIN theme activity β€” Classroom Shape Hunt with clipboards, real-object finds, and choral naming.

Teacher Β· Hunt setup

"Shape Hunt! You are detectives. Clipboard in lap β€” walking feet β€” follow me."
"When I point β€” look β€” say the shape! Clock β€” circle! Window β€” square!"
"Tick your checklist when we find each shape. One tick per shape β€” no scribbling."

Teacher Β· Guided hunt rounds

"Stop β€” look up! The clock is a… circle! Everyone β€” circle!" (draw circle in air)
"Tick your circle box. Next β€” the window β€” square! Four sides β€” square!"
"Triangle β€” look at the roof poster β€” triangle! Star β€” the sticker on the door β€” star!"
"You found all four! Hold up your clipboard β€” show me your ticks!"

Teacher Β· Hunt safety script

"Detective rules β€” eyes and point only. We do not touch the clock or window."
"Stay behind me in a line β€” if you cannot see, rise on knees β€” still sitting when we stop."
"Tick one box at a time β€” circle found? Tick! β€” square found? Tick! β€” slow and proud!"

Teacher Β· Child-led find (optional fast round)

"One brave detective β€” point to a circle in our room. Everyone copies β€” circle!"
"Another friend β€” find a square. Point β€” don't touch β€” square!"
"Hunt finished β€” clipboards on the shelf β€” back to the circle!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child calls everything "circle," pause at the object: "Count the sides β€” one round side β€” circle. Four sides β€” that's square. Try again."

If a child runs ahead during the hunt, stop the group: "Walking feet behind me. I wait for everyone." Point to Sit card at circle return.

If a child ticks all boxes without looking, kneel beside them: "Let's find circle together β€” look at the clock β€” tick now."

If a child touches fragile displays, redirect: "Eyes and point only β€” no touching. Circle β€” point!"

Management Cue: Hunt route before leaving circle: walk the path once empty β€” "We follow this line only. Return to circle when I say finished."
Management Cue: Half-class hunts if the room is small β€” Group A hunts while Group B watches from circle, then swap.
Management Cue: Clipboards stay closed while walking β€” open only at each stop point to prevent tripping.
  1. Distribute clipboards at circle β€” model tick motion (β‰ˆ1 min).
  2. Guided hunt: circle (clock) β†’ square (window) β†’ triangle (roof poster) β†’ star (door sticker) (β‰ˆ4 min).
  3. Whole-group choral naming at each stop β€” shape word + air-draw (β‰ˆ2 min).
  4. Optional child-led find: 1–2 volunteers point to extra shapes (β‰ˆ1 min).
  5. Return to circle β€” clipboards on shelf β€” "Hunt finished! Sit on your spot."

Step 4 Β· Cheering Up (β‰ˆ7 min)

Purpose: Phonics /c/ circle and /s/ square β€” visual cue cards + finger trace + whole-body TPR + peer cheer.

Teacher Β· Introduce /c/ circle

"Circle starts with C! C says c-c-circle. Cuh-cuh-cuh. Like a little cough β€” cuh!"
"This is circle." (show circle card) "C TPR β€” draw a circle in the air β€” cuh β€” circle!"
"Trace C on the card with your finger β€” cuh β€” round and round!"

Teacher Β· Introduce /s/ square + partner cheer

"Square starts with S! S says sss-square. Sssss. Like a snake β€” quiet snake sound. Sss!"
"This is square." (show square card) "S TPR β€” draw four corners β€” sss β€” square!"
"Partner cheer: you trace C β€” cuh circle! Friend traces S β€” sss square! Switch!"

Teacher Β· Praise frames

"Wow! I heard cuh β€” circle sound!"
"Super square sound β€” sss-sss!"
"Your air circle is perfect β€” cuh β€” round!"
"High five for four corners β€” sss β€” square!"

Teacher Β· Visual + trace check

"Circle card β€” draw circle β€” cuh! Square card β€” four sides β€” sss!"
"Stand up β€” big circle β€” cuh! Sit down. Stand up β€” big square β€” sss! Sit down."
"Last check β€” hold both cards β€” circle or square? Listen for the picture!"
Handling Mistakes:

If a child says letter name ("see" for C), redirect: "Sound first β€” cuh β€” not see. Watch my mouth β€” cuh!"

If /s/ becomes shouting, reset whisper: "Tiny snake β€” sss. Quiet snake under the desk."

If a child traces random scribbles, model slow: "Follow the arrow β€” start here β€” cuh β€” round."

If a child refuses to stand for TPR, offer seated trace: "You can trace from your spot β€” cuh circle β€” perfect."

Management Cue: Before standing TPR, say "Stand up in 3, 2, 1" and "Sit down in 3, 2, 1" every time β€” predictable transitions prevent chaos.
Management Cue: Assign shoulder partners before partner cheer β€” "Turn to your neighbor" causes less chaos than "find a partner."
Management Cue: Trace cards pass hand-to-hand β€” sanitize or use one laminated set teacher holds while children air-trace.
  1. Show circle card + C trace card side by side β€” model /c/ three times (β‰ˆ1 min).
  2. Show square card + S trace card β€” model /s/ three times (β‰ˆ1 min).
  3. Stand-up TPR Γ— 3 rounds: circle-cuh β†’ square-sss β†’ teacher leads β†’ whole class (β‰ˆ2 min).
  4. Partner cheer: 30 seconds each side β€” C trace + S trace response (β‰ˆ1 min).
  5. Quick check: hold circle or square card β€” class responds with sound + air-draw without prompt (β‰ˆ1 min).

Wrap-up: Calming Down (5 mins)

Purpose: Lower energy with breathing, affirm shape-hunt effort, build a calm shape collage, and close with Goodbye Song.

Step 5 Β· Calming Down (β‰ˆ5 min)

Purpose: Breathing, shape collage, compliment, goodbye song, dismissal.

Teacher Β· Breathing

"Shape hunt is finished. Hands on your tummy. Soft and still."
"Breathe in… 1, 2, 3. Breathe out… sss, 1, 2, 3. Quiet snake breath out."
"Again. In… 1, 2, 3. Out… cuh, gentle circle breath. Slow and quiet."

Teacher Β· Shape collage

"Glue one shape on your paper β€” say the name β€” circle! Square! Triangle! Star!"
"Pat pat glue β€” one shape β€” name it loud β€” circle! square!"
"Collage finished β€” papers on the shelf β€” hands in lap."

Teacher Β· Compliment circle

"Today you hunted shapes! You found circle and square. You made cuh and sss sounds."
"I am proud of [name] for finding a circle. I am proud of [name] for brave sss sounds."
"I am proud of [name] for careful ticking. Everyone gets a sticker."

Teacher Β· Goodbye routine

"Stand up slowly. Stretch β€” draw a big circle in the air β€” then quiet body."
"Goodbye Song time. Wave your hands."
"Goodbye, goodbye, see you again. Goodbye, goodbye, see you again."
"Goodbye [name], goodbye [name], goodbye everyone β€” see you again!"
"Line up at the door. High five β€” bye bye! Hunt shapes at home!"
Handling Mistakes:

If glue gets messy, stay calm: "One dot of glue β€” pat pat. Too much glue β€” wipe and try again."

If a child names the wrong shape while gluing, point gently: "That piece is a triangle β€” triangle!"

If a child runs to the door during Goodbye Song, pause: "Walking feet. We line up together."

Management Cue: Pre-cut shapes at tables before class β€” glue sticks capped until Step 5 to prevent early mess.
Management Cue: Compliment 2–3 children by name β€” rotate daily so every child hears specific praise within two weeks.
Management Cue: Dismiss in table order β€” never "everyone run to the door."
  1. Two breath cycles with /s/ and /c/ exhale (β‰ˆ1 min).
  2. Quick shape collage β€” one shape per child, name aloud (β‰ˆ1 min).
  3. Compliment circle: 2–3 specific praises + stickers (β‰ˆ1 min).
  4. Goodbye Song with individual name verse (β‰ˆ1 min).
  5. Line up, high-five exit ritual (β‰ˆ1 min).
